ESSENCE

ESSENCE

With the new production "Essence," the ensemble CHOREOS embarks on a journey to the roots of our cultural existence. 16 exceptional performers and an extraordinary accordionist as an instrumental counterpart explore the pressing questions of our existence in eight scenes and pieces.

Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?

Is the human being truly free to define themselves, and are they, in essence, what they make of themselves? This philosophical question is addressed in the production "Essence" through sensual imagery and classical choral music at the highest level, translating it into concrete scenes. Choreographer Lars Scheibner and artistic director Stephan Lutermann, along with their internationally renowned ensemble CHOREOS, are once again at the cutting edge of the times.

Two commissioned compositions for choir and accordion by Seán Doherty ("Schläft ein Lied in allen Dingen") and Georgi Sztojanov ("Essence") use contemporary musical means to directly engage with the existential search for meaning in our society, which hungers for resonance and must grapple with change and ambiguity in all areas of life.

Everything vibrates, pulses, and resonates – we humans, the world, the cosmos.

Additional compositions by Eva Holm Foosnaes, Jan Sandström, and Gunnar Eriksson explore this resonant universe, starting from lullabies and continuously opening new spaces for audience participation. With a song by Leonard Cohen, CHOREOS expands the musical horizon in its new production, allowing the boundaries between different musical styles to dissolve through seamless transitions.
